Big Disk Brake Kit for the Rear Axle
Back Up Next

I ordered the Baer Ironsport  type 9" kit, for the Shelby. I spent some time painting the calipers and rotor centers, to match the front brake I'll eventually get.
The only thing custom, which I had to do was to reduce in length, the caliper to bracket bolts, by 5/8"
With this kit there is provision to shim the caliper in multiple positions. Maybe a longer bolt is needed if you used all the shims. I used a .060 shim, and the bolt was hitting the rotor when tightened.
The rotor is also larger 11.65" as opposed to 11.35 in the mustang specific kit.

I also needed longer wheel studs, which I found a stock one (over the counter auto supply), that was 1/2" more thread and had a longer shoulder, which is perfect for the thicker disc brake hat. This saves getting 3 inchers and cutting them off.

The other thing I liked is the bearing retainer bracket has a cut out, so no need to re and re the axle bearings. That saves a lot of money. Everything on the instal went well. Some line leaks, which were sorted out.

In getting the parking brake to work, the only hiccup I had, was the parking brake cable sleeves are not long enough to reach from the caliper to the bracket on the frame. I cut off a 2" section of the old sleeve and slipped it on in line, to allow the brakes to work. As it is those cables are 1.5" too short.

With the deep 10.5" rim, this is as large a brake as I could possibly fit on my 17 x 10.5 rear rims
