1968 GT500 428 4 speed
Back Up Next

The 1968 Shelby GT500 was quite the cool car. This one had the 428 Police interceptor engine and Ford 4 speed Toploader. The original owner  (2 owners previous to me) saw fit to install fiberglass flares on the rear fenders (yech.) He also installed a race clutch. The incorrect fog lights shown in the pictures were replaced with the factory Lucas lights.

We were getting married at the time, and the car was just too impractical to keep. You could not park it anywhere, unless you kept an eye on it. It had the gas guzzling 428 4V and a race clutch along with a long throw Ford Toploader that would not stay in second gear! The 16 gallon gas tank kept needing a fill up! SO the car had to go. If we had only knew what they would have been worth today (back then). Anyway we bought it for $8500 and I remember having a bank loan for it of about $4000. I sold it for about $10,000 and had to re-ring one of the pistons which was blowing out blue smoke. I took off one head and did it while the engine was in the car (what a big job!) I wish I had kept the multitude of extra Shelby parts that I had with the car... instead of giving them to the buyer, even those are worth a small fortune now!!
