Now I realize that shelby's did not have perfect
fiberglass but this cheapo trunk I got on eBay really fit poorly to
start. Add to that the fact that it was somewhat patterned from the
original glass and it adds up to a lot of work. I consulted with
Dave at Brownlow's performance, who made my very high quality hood
(carbon fiber inserts for strength in places) and fascia, for
tips on how to rectify problems. A few online tips from the
hotrodders forum, and I rolled up my sleeves.
-
First the holes for the hinges were 3/4" out
of position on the passenger side. Fixing that was interesting.
-
Next the trunk when mocked up with the extensions
and taillight housing was leaving a 1/2" to 5/8" gap at
the sheet metal between the back-glass and trunk.
-
Next the mould was twisted slightly. On the
passenger side, the trunk was lower than the quarter panel, on the
drivers side it was higher.
-
Then came the spoiler which was at least 3/8"
out of level. Material was added in a tapered strip on the top of
the passenger side, likewise a tapered strip along the bottom of
the drivers side spoiler
-
Now the extensions. My goal is to not only have
them gap properly, but to have the contours of the spoiler flow
seamlessly through the extensions, so that it looks like one
piece.
